Migraines

Migraines affect over 37 million Americans, and accounts for lost time at work and inability to function at home. The cause of migraines might not be fully understood, but Dr. Dancy can provide relief for migraine sufferers through chiropractic care.

What are the symptoms of migraines?

While many symptoms are common amongst migraine sufferers, not all patients experience the same (or all) symptoms. There are 4 distinct stages to a migraine episode, though not everyone experiences all four stages.

Prodrome Stage (1-2 days before migraine pains begin)
  • Constipation
  • Increased urination and thirst
  • Mood swings
  • Food cravings
  • Yawning
  • Stiffness in the neck and shoulders
Aura Stage

This can occur before or during the pain stage. Aura refers to symptoms coming from the nervous system.

  • Vision loss or disturbance
  • Numbness or "pins and needles" sensations
  • Speech difficulty
  • Uncontrollable body movements or jerks
  • Hearing noises that aren't there
Pain Stage (also called the Migraine Attack Stage)

This stage can last from a few hours to a few days. A pulsing or throbbing pain occurs on one or both sides of the head, along with a sensitivity to light and possibly sounds, smells, and touch. You may be prone to fainting, lightheadedness, or nausea.

Postdrome Stage

The postdrome stage typically lasts about 24 hours after the pain subsides. You may feel drained and wiped out. Sensitivity to light and sound may remain, and you might feel confused, moody, or dizzy.

What causes migraines?

The cause of migraines isn't known, but it seems that genetics and environment play a role. Serotonin also appears to have an influence, as levels drop during a migraine attack. It's still not understood exactly how the process works, or how it's influenced by migraine triggers.

What are some of the more common triggers?

For those at risk, there are a few triggers that can be mitigated in an effort to reduce migraine attacks.

  • Stress
  • Alcohol and caffeinated beverages
  • Food — especially salty and processed food
  • Sensory extremes such as bright lights or strong smells
  • Changes in weather
  • Medications
